Named Aenona Nin, it was one of the biggest settlements of the illyric Liburner. In Roman times the well fortified Aenona became an important strategic seaport. Laid in ruins by the Awars in the 7th century, the town was again settled by Croats. Soon it was established as royal palatinate and episcopal see. The 10th century saw the prosperity of Nin, as the town was the home of 30,000 people. Later, the Turkish destroyed Nin. Today, Nin is a little village and has about 1,300 inhabitants and the lively past is still omnipresent in the form of churches, temples and a historic town centre. Town of culture and cultural heritage around Nin From Nin, you are able to take day-trips to the historically remarkable little towns of Pag, Biograd, Benkovac und Obrovac. For those interested in culture, the town of Zadar (80,000 inhabitants) which is situated 14 kilometres away, is an absolute must to see because of the rich heritage of artistic monuments dating from the Antique, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. A very special experience is the pilgrimage on May and August 15th, when the faithful march to the island of St. Mary, Zecevo, which is near Nin.
